Resolution UAV Services is delighted to announce new capability for the Agricultural Industry

Ensuring we have the most up to date technology to enhance flight performance is our number one priority.  Our latest addition to our Drone comes in the form of two powerful components:

·         Data Link – Allows Endeavour Drone to have a pre-planned flight to be uploaded to the Drone and changed during the flight!

·         Data Logger – Allows the recording of information about the flight which can later be coupled with footage captured by our HD Camera, resulting in useful and accurate data.

Exploiting these new capabilities results in a very useful tool for areas such as the agricultural industry.  The combination of the two components results in a system that can not only plan patterned flights for the Drone, but also record GPS coordinated at any given point in the flight.  This gives added benefits such as:

·         Accurate location of weeds / unhealthy crops in large fields that would take inordinate amounts of time to survey on foot

·         GPS coordinates of weeds / unhealthy crops for precision spraying

·         The ability to follow lengths of fencing, hedging or dry stone wall to look for damages / gaps

·         Detection of burst piping in fields

·         Roof inspection

·         Site surveying

·         River / stream / water body mapping

·         And many, Many more applications

Whitby Regatta - Captured From a New Perspective:

It’s no secret that the Regatta is one of Whitby’s most popular annual events.  With tourists coming from far and wide to enjoy the celebrations, you don’t have to look too hard to see those all so familiar cameras.

This year’s event photography took a twist, with Regatta organisers utilising a drone to capture the event from a new perspective.

Local businessman, Dan Spilman and his team were on hand from his Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Company, Resolution UAV Services, to obtain exciting footage of the event from the air.  Here you can see some of the spectacular shots from not only the Regatta, but the beautiful scenery Whitby coast has to offer.

The drone, piloted by a fully qualified Dan, made an appearance on Sunday and Monday of the Regatta during which time the High Definition camera, mounted on the drone, captured unique images and videos of various events taking place including the fun run, motocross and the rowing races.  Better still, the weather conditions meant that Dan and his team could operate as planned.

Being a local lad, Dan has attended the Regatta for many years, but this year has been special for him in many ways, ‘‘I’ve always loved the Regatta, it’s such a fantastic event and really shows what Whitby town is all about, to be able to get involved as a local business really has been great!  Not to mention the opportunity to talk to other small businesses in the region.’’

The Regatta Committee members are already reaping the benefits of the footage obtained, the images and videos are helping them to plan next year’s event due to the unique perspective of the stalls, displays and entertainment which simply would not have been possible from the ground.  The Regatta Committee can now use the footage to utilise space on the pier more effectively for future events.

Resolution UAV Services is a fully qualified, friendly local business specialising in aerial filming and photography.  For more information, useful resources and souvenirs of this year’s Regatta visit www.resolutionuav.co.uk or contact us now on 01947 821 464.

Lost Plane: The Bermuda-wheat field

The Bermuda Triangle is famous for the eerie disappearances of planes and boats over the years (allegedly).  Outside of Whitby, close to a village called Sneaton, it would seem that a wheat field has somehow managed to acquire the same mysterious ability!

Resolution UAV Services was contacted by a local remote control plane pilot in distress.  He had crash landed in a wheat field and this plane had supposedly disappeared…

Eager to assess our  ‘Search and Rescue’ capabilities, we agreed that we would join the search for the missing plane.

Further discussion with the pilot lead to the understanding that we were looking for a white delta wing with a wingspan of roughly 1.5m, that had crashed somewhere on the other side of a manure heap in the ‘Bermuda’-wheat field.

The pilot stated that he and a friend had spent over 2 hours looking for the plane in the 40,950m2 (10.1 Acre) field.  But the elbow height wheat and contours of the land made it impossible to see from a distance.  To further restrict proceedings, the searchers were also reluctant to leave the tractor tracks for fear of damaging the farmer’s crop.

After arrival at the field at which the plane was lost (and about 5 minutes to set up the UAV and ground station) it took Resolution UAV Services approximately 3 minutes and 30 seconds to locate the remote control plane. To make things even better the plane had crashed very close to a tractor track, meaning that minimal damage to crops was caused during the retrieval of the aircraft.

Ground Search Party – 2 Hours+, No Result

UAV – 3 minutes 30 seconds, Plane Located and Retrieved

Hidden History

The North Yorkshire Moors is a beautiful area.  It’s host to a variety of wildlife and covers a huge chunk of North Yorkshire.  Criss-crossed with walks, ruins and ancient burial grounds, there is also plenty of history hiding under the heather.  Some of the more popular and well known historic attractions include Roman roads, old railway lines and scattered ruins.  However, some lesser known remnants of local history are hidden in plain view . . .
Something on the expanses of moorland near Rudland Rigg captured our attention recently.  Many of you will know the scenic walkways, what you may not know is that these run through the middle of some hidden history.  Surrounding the footpath is a grid like layout of large ‘bumps’ on the ground that are all but invisible to anyone who is not on the lookout for them.  These bumps are actually the scars left from coal mines, or Bell Pits, dating back to the 18th Century (and some believe even earlier), the coal they yielded was of poor quality but good enough for local use.  It gained the nickname ‘Danby Crackers’ due the way it would splutter and explode in the fireplace when burnt.

As illustrated above, the mines consisted of a pit shaft normally up to 9m deep, this lead to a circular area below with a diameter of between 3m – 12m.  Coal was then extracted until the structural integrity of the mine was reduced, subsequently cave-ins became a risk due to their size.  The picture below shows the effect on the landscape from approximately one hundred Bell Pits on the moorland near Rudland Rigg.

Resolution UAV Services utilised Endeavour (our UAV) to gain a new perspective of these mines.  We captured images and video of the hidden coal mines to show just what you can discover by simply making slight changes to your perspective or vantage point.  The view of these mines from the ground is very unimpressive, but with the addition of a UAV, a HD camera and an inquisitive pilot the scale of the work conducted in the past becomes very evident.

Robert Goodwill MP Visits Local Technology Firm that’s Flying High!

SyntheSys Systems Engineers Ltd recently hosted Robert Goodwill Conservative MP for Scarborough and Whitby and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department of Transport.
From left to right: Daniel Spilman, MP Robert Goodwill and Dr John S Hartas.

SyntheSys’ main business is ICT consultancy providing innovative systems and training solutions, although this is not all that the Company does.  During a tour of the Company’s head office at St Hilda’s Business Centre, Mr Goodwill was able to meet SyntheSys’ latest recruit, Daniel Spilman, who is already taking the Company to new heights.

Dan graduated from Leeds University with a Masters in Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering and was awarded the IMechE best project certificate for 4th year Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering.  Since joining the company in October 2013 Dan has been working closely with the Managing Director, Dr John Hartas, in the Company’s work in the unmanned vehicles market.  Dan has a keen interest in this field and has subsequently designed and manufactured a small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which is capable of providing a wide range of applications in aerial work.  He has also qualified as a Civil Aviation Authority approved UAV pilot to enable him to operate the UAV commercially.

The solutions that Dan has brought to the company were of particular interest to Mr Goodwill, since his role at the Department of Transports relates specifically to aviation and the introduction of new legislation governing the operation of UAVs.

SyntheSys’ Managing Director, John Hartas commented.  “Dan’s contribution has helped us to diversify into the civilian UAV market, which holds a lot of new potential for us.  It was great for us to discuss this initiative with our local MP who was able to bring fresh insights into how this market is developing.”

SyntheSys’ Resolution UAV services are currently being used locally in a range of different projects including aerial photography, surveying, mapping and advertising schemes.

Mānava - Endeavour is Exploring from a New Perspective

‘’Do just once what others say you can’t do and you will never pay attention to their limitations again.’’
Captain James Cook

On the 246th Anniversary of Captain James Cooks arrival in Tahiti on 13th April 1769, as part of his maiden voyage, it’s time to celebrate the launch of Resolution UAV Services. So here we say a big ‘Mānava’ (which is the Tahitian for ‘Welcome’) to you on this memorable day for us!!
Who are we and what do we do?
Resolution UAV Services is based in the small seaside town of Whitby, and is so named for the second ship that the explorer Captain Cook took on a round the world Voyage.  The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle that we use to capture aerial images and video is named Endeavour, which was the ship Cook sailed on his first world voyage.

We have extensive knowledge and experience in aerial videography and photography.  We are fully licensed having completed the relevant BNUC-S courses and our services operate in accordance with the regulations set by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).  As part of our UAV expertise, we provide knowledge and experience in the operation, design and manufacture of small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles as part of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation’s (NATO’s) Industrial Advisory Group (NIAG).  We strive to produce the highest quality aerial footage at very competitive prices, with the aim of providing a versatile solution to any problem.

Whilst our location may not be quite as exotic as Tahiti, it’s fair to say our base here in Whitby has given us plenty of inspiration and opportunity for launching our new UAV Services, some of which we wanted to share with you.

To celebrate our launch and demonstrate some of the diverse ways that Resolution UAV Services could be of benefit to our community, we took a trip to the nearby village of Runswick.  We had some fun recreating our company logo and captured some great footage of this beautiful location, during which attention was drawn to an unexpected onlooker.

Following a slow approach, so as not to alarm or distress the curious seal, the pilot took the UAV to a safe distance.  This little fellow did not seem to mind the presence of Endeavour and watched the UAV with interest as it hung in the air in front of it.  The pilot did not fly too close to the seal, nor did he linger too long as he did not want to upset the animal, but the footage obtained was none the less impressive.

So here’s to Captain James Cook, Tahiti, Runswick and our new friend!
